UV traffic light system at Rottweil outdoor pool: greater safety and transparency for bathers
Innovative solution from ENRW and WERMA provides real-time information on UV levels
Rottweil Outdoor Pool, in collaboration with ENRW Energieversorgung Rottweil, the Rottweil Health Authority and signalling technology specialist WERMA, is setting new standards in visitor information and health protection. With the installation of an innovative UV traffic light, bathers now have access to an easy-to-understand, real-time display of current UV levels directly on site.
The system is clearly visible in the immediate vicinity of the swimming pool. At the heart of the solution are three WERMA eSIGN LED signal columns, which visualise the current UV index using an official colour scale. The display is complemented by clear information boards on all three sides of the structure, which clearly explain the meaning of the respective colours.
Clear information right where it is needed
Protection against UV radiation is playing an increasingly important role in outdoor swimming pool operations, particularly on sunny days. The aim of the project was therefore to find a solution that is immediately understandable without any prior technical knowledge and enables bathers to orientate themselves quickly. “Our aim is to offer our bathers the greatest possible safety and optimal health protection – whilst at the same time setting ourselves apart from other outdoor pools in the region,” explains pool manager Steven Ulrich.
The inspiration for the UV traffic light came about rather by chance: “During a holiday in Ibiza, I saw something similar on the beach. I knew straight away: we need something like that in Rottweil too,” reports Steven Ulrich with a smile.
In-house development based on WERMA’s eSIGN LED signal column
As no suitable supplier for a comparable solution could be found despite extensive research, ENRW developed its own technical implementation in collaboration with regional partners. A sensor continuously measures the current UV radiation. The data is processed via an existing control system and transmitted to the eSIGN LED signal columns from WERMA via 24V signals.
Thanks to their full-surface display, the eSIGN columns used enable a particularly intuitive visualisation of UV levels in the official colours of green, yellow, orange, red and violet.
“The great thing is that the colours of the eSIGN can be individually programmed, making almost any desired colour display possible,” explains Christoph Müller from Technical Sales at WERMA. The flexibility of the solution was also a decisive factor for those in charge on site: “We searched for a long time but couldn’t find any other product that could come close to what the eSIGN makes possible,” adds Steven Ulrich.
Modern design with high visibility
A three-sided support structure was developed specifically for the installation. A local metalworking firm manufactured a robust, weatherproof stand measuring 120 x 120 centimetres. The structure is visually reminiscent of a modern advertising column and, thanks to its three display sides, ensures optimal visibility from various areas of the outdoor pool.
Thanks to the full-surface colour display, the current UV level is visible at a glance – regardless of visitors’ age or technical familiarity. “Thanks to the clear colour scheme, absolutely everyone under-stands the current situation immediately – from toddlers to the older generation,” emphasises Steven Ulrich. “This allows guests to adjust their behaviour straight away and, for example, seek out the shade.”
Outlook for the future: UV information also available online
With the new UV traffic light system, Rottweil Open-Air Swimming Pool impressively demonstrates how existing signalling technology can be creatively adapted to new applications . The combination of smart technology, clear information display and practical implementation creates real added value for visitors – whilst also setting an innovative benchmark for modern open-air swimming pool concepts in public spaces.
