Interfaces in WERMA systems

The right connection for your application

From standardised protocols to customised integrations - gain insight into the variety of interfaces that WERMA products have mastered, to meet your requirements and ensure seamless system solutions.

PROFINET

Fast communication for smart automation

PROFINET (Process Field Network) is an industrial Ethernet communication protocol developed specifically for the requirements of automation technology. It enables fast and reliable communication between controllers (PLCs), sensors, actuators, and signal devices, ensuring smooth processes in modern production environments.

In plants, sensors – such as temperature sensors or light barriers – transmit their measurements to the PLC almost without delay. The PLC then precisely controls motors, valves, or signal devices in real time. By using standard Ethernet technology, PROFINET is highly flexible and scalable.

Whether in small machines or complex production lines, PROFINET forms the basis for efficient, transparent and future-proof communication in line with Industry 4.0.

IO-Link

New standards with IO technology

IO-Link defines the standard for global IO technologies (IEC 61131-9), enables communication with both sensors and actuators, and thus represents the future of networking. Consisting of an IO-Link master and various components with an IO-Link interface, such as signal towers (sensor, actuators or both), IO-Link presents itself as a dynamic point-to-point interface.

In contrast to conventional bus systems, IO-Link is limited to 15 metres, but the possibility of integrating bus systems means that greater distances between the PLC and machine can be bridged without any problems.

The downward compatibility of IO-Link enables seamless integration into existing systems. Wiring is straightforward using a conventional 3-core, unshielded cable (voltage and IO-Link port). If a component, such as the master, fails, the new master learns from its counterpart, such as a sensor. Continuous communication takes place via the IODD protocol. Previously required direct configuration of the sensors on the device is now carried out in real time by the central control system. IO-Link revolutionises connectivity and brings efficiency in real time.

AS-Interface

Efficient networking for modern automation technology

AS-Interface, recognisable by its characteristic yellow cable, represents an advanced networking solution in automation technology.

This innovative technology offers many advantages of larger and more expensive fieldbuses at a much lower price. The "master" automatically organises communication in the network, exchanges process images and diagnostic data with the higher-level controller and recognises connected devices without user configuration. The AS-Interface master does not require any application-specific software.

The network topology is extremely flexible and supports various structures, especially tree-shaped structures. In contrast to ring and line structures, slaves can be integrated at any optimum point, whereby branches can be realised easily and flexibly - even to moving system parts.

WERMA Signaltechnik GmbH + Co KG has been a proud member of the AS-Interface® Association since 1996, and we successfully use this innovative networking solution in our products.

EtherNet/IP

Reliable data communication in industrial environments

EtherNet/IP (Ethernet Industrial Protocol) is based on proven Ethernet technology and has been specifically designed for industrial automation. Thanks to the Common Industrial Protocol (CIP), both cyclic process data for controlling motors, valves, or conveyors, and acyclic diagnostic data for monitoring and maintaining sensors or actuators can be transmitted reliably and in real time.

The protocol supports the prioritisation of control commands (Quality of Service), enabling stable and high-performance communication even in complex networks. Moreover, EtherNet/IP allows seamless integration with IIoT and Industry 4.0 systems, enabling real-time monitoring and control of signal devices and machine conditions.

This combination of efficiency, flexibility, and future-readiness makes EtherNet/IP an ideal solution for modern production and automation environments.

USB

Simple connection with a universal interface

The USB (Universal Serial Bus) interface is a globally standardised connection technology that enables fast and straightforward data transfer as well as power supply between devices. It is used in industrial communication to control signal devices easily and directly.

Through specified DLL (Dynamic Link Library) files, the functions of a signal device can be controlled, and its current status queried. This allows, for example, signal towers or beacons to be conveniently operated via software.

With its universal compatibility, easy implementation, and reliable performance, the USB interface offers a flexible and cost-effective solution for a wide range of industrial automation applications.
